Understanding Your Bill

Understanding the components of the electric bill can help you better manage your energy usage and costs. Scroll over the numbers for an explanation of each component. Additional information, such as an explanation of terms and contact telephone numbers, is located on the back of the bill.














1. Account Number - Specific number identifying your account.
2. Prompt Payment - The amount due by the prompt payment date.
3. Due Date for Prompt Payment - The date that the Prompt Payment amount is due.
4. Late Payment - The amount due if the bill is paid after the Prompt Payment date.
5. Amount Paid - Space to write in the amount paid.
6. Next Meter Reading Date - The next date the meter for this account is scheduled to be read.
7. Service Period - The period covered by this bill.
8. Meter Readings - The meter readings used to calculate this bill.
9. Usage - The usage, in kilowatt hours, for this bill. (A kilowatt-hour is a unit of measurement for electricity usage.)
10. Current Billing Information - The amount due by the prompt payment date.
11. Bill Message - Area where messages and reminders are printed.
12. DP&L Charges Detail - DP&L charges broken down into specific componenets.
13. Rate Number - The specific electric rate number. In this example, it is a rate number for a residential account.
14. Previous 12 Months Usage - The previous 12 months usage by kilowatt hours. (A kilowatt-hour is a unit of measurement for electricity usage.)

Explanation of Billing Terms

Actual Reading - A reading taken from your meter.

Customer Charge - The fixed monthly basic distribution charge to partially cover costs for billing, meter reading, service line maintenance and equipment.

Distribution Charge - Charge for moving electricity over electric distribution lines to your home or business.

Transmission Related Charges - The amount the utility or a supplier charges for operating and maintaining the electric transmission system.

Estimated Reading - (EST or E) On the months we do not read your meter, we calculate your bill based on your past usage. Adjustments may be needed later when we take an actual meter reading. If you would like to read your own meter to avoid estimated bills, call the account information number on the front of the bill with your meter reading.

Generation Charge - Charge associated with the production of electricity.

Kilowatt-Hour (KWH) - The unit measure of electricity. For example, you use one kilowatt-hour of electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for 10 hours.

Late Payment Charge - A 1½% late charge added to the overdue amount if you do not pay your bill by the due date for prompt payment.
