Outage Tips

Tips for Weathering the Storm
Here in West Central Ohio, Mother Nature can bring wintry freezing rain and summertime thunderstorms. And that can knock out power. Here are some simple tips to help you weather the storm.

Call 877-4Outage (877-468-8243) to Report an Outage
This automated line will allow you to quickly report your outage by using the telephone number associated with the account or by entering your DP&L account number. Using this automated system helps us to efficiently record the location of outages, determine the cause, and restore power in an efficient manner.

Never Touch Downed Power Lines
Always assume downed lines are live and dangerous. Never touch them, regardless of the type of line. Report downed wires to DP&L by calling 877-468-8243, 937-331-3900 or 800-433-8500. If there is an immediate life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

Be Careful with Candles
Avoid using candles if possible. Flashlights are a safer alternative. If you do use candles, be sure to place them on a stable surface away from combustible materials, and be careful around children and pets. Never leave burning candles unattended.

Don't Enter a Flooded Building or Basement
Don't enter a flooded building or basement where there is standing water unless you've had the main power turned off.

Think Safety First When Using Portable Heaters and Generators
When using portable heaters and generators, follow all manufacturers' instructions and think safety first. One of the most important precautions is to ensure that you have proper ventilation for this type of equipment.

Notify DP&L of Life Support Equipment
If someone at your location relies on life support equipment, contact customer service. We will note it on your account. However, we cannot guarantee you priority restoration, and you still need to be prepared with a back-up plan should an outage occur.

Keep the Refrigerator Closed
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full and the door remains closed).View more on food safety here.

Unplug Electronics
Thunderstorms and lightning strikes can cause power surges. The best protection is to unplug electronics during severe storms. If the power is out, unplugging electronics also protects them from possible power surges when service is restored.
